Opatija is located in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea, in Croatia, along the coast of the Kvarner Bay, at the foot of Mount Učka. Thanks to its favorable location and mild Mediterranean climate, it has become one of the most famous tourist destinations in the region.

It was first mentioned in written records in 1449, when a Benedictine settlement existed around the Church of St. Jacob, which today is one of the city’s symbols. However, Opatija experienced its true rise in the late 19th century when it became a fashionable resort for Austro-Hungarian aristocracy.

Opatija’s development began in 1844 with the construction of Villa Angiolina, built by the wealthy Rijeka merchant Iginio Scarpa. Soon after, the Austro-Hungarian authorities recognized its tourism potential and started building luxury hotels, promenades, and parks. A particularly significant moment was in 1889 when Opatija was officially declared a climatic health resort, further increasing its popularity among nobles and wealthy travelers.

Today, Opatija is renowned for its rich history, top-tier tourism, and distinctive elegance, making it a unique destination on the Adriatic.

Opatija has a secret garden

American Gardens

Opatija hides a special garden, a green oasis of peace with a stunning view of Kvarner Bay – the American Gardens. This 8,000 m² park is located close to the town center and Slatina Beach but offers an escape into tranquility and nature. After decades of being closed, it has now reopened to the public.

Its history dates back to the 1920s when a wealthy Hungarian paprika merchant, Michael Paulus Kuczor, inspired by a dream of an angel among flowers, decided to create a magnificent botanical garden. He was assisted by Hilda von Hortenau, the daughter of a Viennese ballerina and an Austrian archduke.

With great effort, they created a terraced garden filled with exotic plants, vineyards, and thousands of roses, once charging an entrance fee of 5 lira. Due to its beauty, it was called “The Gardens of Semiramis”, while the local name “American Gardens” remains to this day.

Located on the green slopes above Opatija, the gardens can be reached on foot or via a safe pedestrian bridge. Visit and discover the blend of history, nature, and an unforgettable view of Kvarner!
